The definition of what art means has been hotly debated for some time. Not just in the aspect of whether or not someone’s mural made out of trash bags counts as ‘Art’, but also in the aspect of what the term actually applies to. Does ‘art’ mean design? Does art mean the continued practice of a specific body of knowledge, Martial Arts for example? Does art mean anything that pleases (or is intended to) the eye or ear?

The truth is that there will probably never be an agreement reached, because there are so many different groups of people trying to claim the term for their own intents and purposes, as if it somehow immediately gives more credibility to their profession if they are ‘artists’, or ‘artistic’. So for now we will just need to accept the fact that when someone uses the term ‘Art’, you may need to keep it very open to interpretation. This is not a question of preference, or personal taste, but a simple fact that because the meaning has been so diluted through time that it can literally apply to widely different things.
